The Caneel Bay Legacy
The Spirit of Renewal
In the midst of life’s complexities, the human spirit seeks rejuvenation through communion with unspoiled nature. As Laurance S. Rockefeller poignantly expressed at the dedication of Virgin Islands National Park in 1956, this need for physical and spiritual renewal is timeless. Today, amidst global uncertainties and challenges, travelers continue to seek a sanctuary—a place to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with themselves and their loved ones.
A Legacy Founded on Nature
This enduring legacy is at the heart of the Caneel Bay Resort, envisioned by Laurance S. Rockefeller, who shared his father’s commitment to conservation. On a Caribbean voyage in 1952, he discovered a pristine beach on St. John, originally known as “Klein Kaneel,” which means “Little Cinnamon.” Captivated by its natural beauty, Rockefeller transformed the existing Caneel Bay Plantation into a sanctuary where guests could immerse themselves in the wonders of the island.
Simplicity in Elegance
Caneel Bay Resort opened in 1956, designed to offer a simple yet elegant experience. Rockefeller insisted on minimal amenities—no telephones, televisions, or locks on doors, and no building higher than a palm tree—allowing the stunning surroundings to take center stage. Guests spent their days swimming, snorkeling, and exploring, with evenings devoted to delicious, unpretentious meals under a starry sky, free from artificial light.
Enduring Connections
For over six decades, Caneel Bay became a cherished retreat for families and couples alike. It welcomed discerning guests from around the world, fostering a sense of belonging and community. Memorable traditions, from high tea at Turtle Bay Estate House to festive holiday celebrations, created lasting bonds among visitors and staff.
Resilience and Hope
The devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 marked a challenging chapter for Caneel Bay. Portions of the resort have remained closed since, representing a significant loss for the St. John community. Yet, the spirit of Caneel Bay lives on in the hearts of those who hold dear the memories and rituals formed during their visits.
